The Vatican Museums are open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with last entry at 4:00 PM. They are typically closed on Sundays, except for the last Sunday of each month when admission is free.
A modest dress code is strictly enforced at all Vatican sites. Visitors must cover their knees and shoulders – no shorts, miniskirts, or sleeveless tops. This applies to both men and women. Hats must be removed when entering buildings.
The Vatican Museums span over 7 kilometers of galleries and can be confusing to navigate. Our downloadable map highlights the must-see attractions and optimal routes depending on your available time, from 1-hour highlights to full-day explorations.
The Vatican is easily accessible via Rome's public transportation. Take Metro Line A to Ottaviano-San Pietro station (10-minute walk to Vatican entrance) or Cipro station. Buses 40, 64, and 62 also stop near St. Peter's Square.
For the best experience, visit early morning (8-10 AM) or late afternoon (3-5 PM) to avoid peak crowds. Wednesdays can be especially busy due to Papal Audiences. Book skip-the-line tickets in advance, wear comfortable shoes, and bring water.
Photography without flash is permitted in most areas except the Sistine Chapel. Large bags, food, and drinks are not allowed inside. Touching artwork is strictly prohibited. Silence is requested in sacred areas, especially the Sistine Chapel.
